It is if you've got a "real" internet system. The problem you find is that systems (such as nu3b2) that aren't registered. When this happens the "set conv=internet" of mailx is a big lose. For this reason you don't want to turn it on. A better option for replying to usenet articles is a mail router that supports a safe form of re-routing. >My system is not actually able to deliver messages with these addresses >but it does have hooks to run other programs from inside the "mailx" >system... Is there a mailer program I can/should be running? Mail addressing is going towards domains and you'll need a mail router that can handle domains (and internet addressing). I'd suggest you get smail, either mine or theirs. I'm going to be prejudiced and say that you should use my version of smail. It is set up to handle the configuration and maintenance automatically, and also centralizes administration at a single site for multiple-site domains. You will find that most other mail routers preclude running the identical binary on multiple machines because they compile-in the configuration. Find out if National University has a domain name registered; if it does it will probably be something line "natu.edu". Note that none of the mail routers (smail/uumail/hpmail/sendmail/mmdf) require that you change the program that a user runs, so that your users can continue to use mailx. >The reason I ask is that If someone sends me mail from usenet I get >a Reply-To: string that starts at my backbone site and goes from >there. > >I get: sdcsvax!... >instead of: man!jack!ucsdhub!sdcsvax!... > >I need the latter, or some solution. According to my manual you can >only set an alias for the last recepiant, not an intervening machine >name. Almost any mail router can fix this problem. With my version of smail the normal fix would be the line NEXTINFO sdcsvax sdcsvax.ucsd.edu!%s in the configuration file, although the PUSHYROUTE option will also fix it. -- Matt Costello <matt.costello@SanDiego.NCR.COM> +1 619 485 2926 <matt.costello%SanDiego.NCR.COM@Relay.CS.NET> {sdcsvax,cbosgd,pyramid,nosc.ARPA,ihnp4}!ncr-sd!matt
