[comp.mail.misc] smail sendmail.cf problems

salzman@rdlvax.UUCP (Gumby) (07/28/87)

I'm having problems configuring the sendmail.cf that comes with the
smail 2.3 distribution for our site. We are an ARPAnet site in addition
to having UUCP connections, but we don't have any local net as of yet.

The shell script for configuring sendmail.cf asks wether or not there
are SMTP connections. I answer "y" to this and sendmail still sends
network bound mail through UUCP. This is obviously not what it should
do. As of now I've abandoned smail all together until I can get sendmail
and smail to work together properly.

What I gather it's supposed to do when it gets a mail message addressed to
"user@host.domain" is check the host table (/etc/hosts) for the existance of
host.domain, if it exists, send the message via SMTP, otherwise send it
through smail for handling. That would make the most sense anyway. I'm
currently using the sendmail.cf created by Eric Fair at Berkeley for
UUCP/Internet hosts. This works well because it also handles messages of the
form "user@host.BITNET" or "user@host.CSNET" and automatically sends these
through the proper gateways. I would like something that will handle this as
well. I am (obviously) not a sendmail guru, nor do I intend to be (I've got
better things to do with my time at this point), so if anyone can be of
any assitance, it would be greatly appreciated.

The goal here is to be able to address ALL mail coming off this machine
as "user@host.domain" or "user@host" (for local network when we get
our other machines) and not have to worry about how it's getting
there. Wasn't this the goal of smail to begin with? It doesn't seem
to be fulfilling that goal as of yet.

One other note that may be usefull. We are running a Vanilla 4.2bsd
system (purchased, by mistake from a company called VLS some years
ago before I existed at RDL) and there may be some problems with
sendmail that I don't know about. We are upgrading to Mt. Xinu 4.3bsd
within a couple weeks though. So if it is a bug, I'll just wait it out.

Please reply via e-mail. Thanks in advance for any responses!
