[comp.mail.misc] Connecting to BITNET with a UNIX machine

morris@scdpyr.UUCP (Don Morris) (11/18/87)

Is there anybody out there that is connected to BITNET but that has
the connection implemented in a UNIX machine rather than an IBM
machine? We want to get a BITNET connection but would rather connect
it to a SUN 3 than an IBM 4381. Any hints, software, advice would
be appreciated.

Penn State Department of Computer Science sells a package called UREP
which does what you want. To get information on licensing and cost
send a mail message to <urep-license@psuvax1.uucp>. If you have accees
to the Internet mail to <urep-license@psuvax1.psu.edu>, and finally the
BITNET address is <urep-license@psuvax1.bitnet>. The latest version
being sent out is V3.2 and I believe it cost US$850.

You might try using Penn State's UREP package to connect your Unix box
to the nearest IBM site running RSCS. I've seen it work in other
situations (small Vax & 4.3 bsd to 4341-2 running VM). I like it. It
works well.

I think you can drop a note to postmaster@psuvax1.bitnet and he'll
send it to the right place, although don't quote me on it.

another note: I think you need a sync port as well. Check with PSU, though.
