[comp.mail.misc] More Big Changes at U. of Maryland

steve@mimsy.UUCP (Steve D. Miller) (02/03/88)

This message contains the latest information concerning the mimsy
death watch. If you deal with us as a UUCP or NNTP site, you should read
this, and you should make sure your system administrator reads this, too.

It now appears that mimsy (mimsy.umd.edu, for those with Internet
access) will be going down this Sunday, the 7th of February. Also, brillig
(aka brillig.umd.edu) and tove (aka tove.umd.edu) will be going down at the
same time. The latter two machines are less important, though -- it is
mimsy's down time that we feel merits this broadcast to everyone and his
kid sister, as mimsy is a major UUCP hub for the D.C. area...

We expect that mimsy et al. will be unavailable for UUCP or NNTP
access for three weeks. Therefore, mimsy will be coming up at about the end
of February. As stated previously, we cannot provide alternate UUCP or NNTP
access (though we'd like to). If you really need a feed, you should
probably talk to the UUNET folks. Also, if you route UUCP traffic through
mimsy, you will lose during this time. This may be a big problem, as it
seems that we're being used heavily as a link between uunet and rutgers
right now. Please mark mimsy as dead in your pathalias databases.

Mimsy and the other machines in this second group will be available
for SMTP. We plan to be swapping a Sun in for each machine in this group,
and those who could receive mail on mimsy will still be able to do so.
Since our other UUCP host (gymble) is still not near any phone lines, we
will be cut off from the UUCP world; if you are on a UUCP-only host, and
you're expecting mail from someone on any of the UMCP CS or UMIACS machines,
please understand that the mail may take a while to get to you.

Of course, anonymous FTP to mimsy won't work, as the archives there
are bigger than the whole disk we have to work with...

This move will mean the demise of mimsy's MILNET connection for
roughly the next year. Updated host table entries will be forthcoming from
the NIC sometime, though you may want to change things manually on your end
until the new HOSTS.TXT record makes it out.

Once mimsy et al. are down, we will be going back to our addresses
on subnet 128 of 128.8. If you're host-table based, you will be able to
reach our machines again; if you're nameserver-based, you never had any
problem.

We think that about sums it up. Any comments or questions are
welcome - you can direct them to dc-connect@mimsy.umd.edu, or to us
personally.
