[comp.mail.misc] Question about comsat, biff, inetd

ray3rd@ssc-vax.UUCP (Ray E Saddler III) (09/08/88)

Hello -

I'm rather new to this newsgroup, so pardon me if this is a
  real elementry question:

Why isn't my system notifying me about new mail? My 4.3BSD
runs an inetd process, the /etc/inetd.conf looks like this:

  # Internet server configuration database
  #
ftp stream tcp nowait root /etc/ftpd ftpd
telnet stream tcp nowait root /etc/telnetd telnetd
shell stream tcp nowait root /etc/rshd rshd
login stream tcp nowait root /etc/rlogind rlogind
exec stream tcp nowait root /etc/rexecd rexecd
#uucpd stream tcp nowait uucp /etc/uucpd uucpd
#tftp dgram udp nowait nobody /etc/tftpd tftpd
comsat dgram udp wait root /etc/comsat comsat
talk dgram udp wait root /etc/talkd talkd

My /etc/services shows the biff service like this:

  biff 512/udp comsat

All mail arrives fine, but I'm only notified about mail at login,
not between commands as biff & comsat are expected to.

Any hints will be greatly appreciated!
