[comp.mail.misc] USENET to IBM's VNET, is it possible?

lenny@icus.islp.ny.us (Lenny Tropiano) (10/25/88)

I have someone I would like to keep in touch with. He is working for
IBM in Florida, and says he has an account on IBM's VNET. Is there
a gateway from USENET, Internet, etc... to VNET. If so, what would
the syntax be and where would I mail.

Thanks,

Lenny

I don't remember the specifics, but the last I heard, any mail going
into or out of IBM's VNET had to be authorized ahead of time and
have things set up on the gateway machine.

to reach vnet:

		user%host@ibm.com

(internet)

Well, yeah, but only if user has been authorized by the powers that
be within IBM to accept mail from the outside world. This is usually
the case only if 'user' is working for the research arm of IBM (e.g.
 San Jose or Yorktown).

Well, looking at the "Notable Computer Networks" article from
Oct. 1986 of CACM (Volume 29 number 10), it says that

From ARPA Internet: USERID@IBM.COM should work.

or from UUCP:

gateway!ibm.com!USERID%HOST

This article is old, so I don't know if it's still valid.

Well, the address from the ARPA Internet above will only work if
the user has an account on that machine (ibm.com). If anything
would work, the UUCP *might*; I've never tried it. But, you must
know the name of the machine in VNET (IBM's internal network).
As far as I know, if the user at IBM does not have access to a
machine that has contact to the outside world, then you cannot
reach him/her. At least I didn't see an immediate way to do it
while I was employed there this summer. (Of course, I didn't check
for UUCP or the Internet..so, who knows?)

In actual fact, there is no ibm.com machine. ibm.com is actually a piece
of software that runs on a machine in California, and figures out who the
user actually is, and relays it. Only a few thousand IBM employees are
actually registered. So, whereas njs@ibm.com will work for me, it won't
work for most. Most of the employees who have net access work for the
research division, since after all, these are research nets.. :-)

UUCP gateways are available in a couple of places, but they won't
relay mail to IBM in general, and the same sorts of restriction (internal
userid and node must be known) applies to the bitnet gateway in Yorktown.

The answer seems to be that unless this person is registered, there is no
way to get there from here.

Well I tried the UUCP mail address, with local VNET machine tacked in
in the proper place, and got a bounced reply from the mailer with a
 message of the form :

"User <name> unknown, or not authorized to receive incoming mail",

so maybe there's a little more required from IBMs end - like willingness
to let people get IN. After last Xmas' 'joke' I can't really blame
them.
