[comp.mail.misc] Unix <-> VMS mail can they talk?

gmd@sirius.UUCP (George MacDonald) (11/10/88)

I am sure this question has been asked before,

"How can one connect VMS mail and Unix mail"

We have lots of SUN on a network running mail and have everyone mailing quite
happily, we also have a number of VAX VMS which also have mail bouncing
arround, but the two universes don't connect(via mail that is). We have
SUNLINK DNI, so we can set host/rlogin back and forth and I know enough
about the SUN's to make it do tricks, but I am VMS illiterate.

Physically we are connected via ethernet/decnet and could set up serial lines
easily(Would prefer the ethernet solution though).

Is there anything that runs on a VMS system that resembles sendmail/uucp?

It seems fairly straight forwards to write a program that would go from the
unix side to grab mail from my personal mailbox and mail this to myself
(Am I missing something here?), but generalizing this seems to be a problem
due to passwords etc.

Personally I would settle for just getting my mail on the VMS side delivered
to the UNIX side but It would be much nicer if it would go both ways 8-).

If there are no public domain solutions does anyone know of commercial ones!

Thanks for any help,

While we are on the subject of Unix and VMS connectivity, I was
wondering if anyone knows of (or has ideas on) connections between
Unix and BNA (Burroughs Network Architecture) ?

it's easy to get them to talk if your VMS vax also talks SMTP...We use
the Woolagong WIN/TCP which gives most TCP services (for a rather large
fee).

We also get unix mail to Decnet-only Vaxes by routing through an Ultrix
Vaxstation 2000. Ultrix's mailer has a very nice interface between
Decnet mail and SMTP mail...

to get mail from your Suns you'd mail to :

	user%vax.dnet@ultrix

the .dnet tells Ultrix to use Decnet mail...
