I've run into a problem sending mail to Irish sites (e.g. mevax1.tcd.ie) via mcvax. I used to use mcvax!mevax1.tcd.ie!user@uunet.uu.net and everything was OK (I believe the message went from mcvax to ukc and thence to iclitc (or whatever the Irish backbone is)). Now, the problem: just the other day I had a message bounced by ukc, who apparently are only forwarding mail from 'authorised' users. My question, therefore: is ukc the only gateway to Irish sites or does there exist <X> such that mcvax!<X>!mevax1.tcd.ie!user@uunet.uu.net will do the trick? Any advice gratefully received! The rejection which you experienced was due to an incorrect address. The log shows that mail was sent from pe@maxwell.ece.cmu.edu addressed to @mcvax.uucp:gleeson@mevax1.tcd.ie This tripped the authorisation system since your site is not authorised to send international outbound mail from here (reasonable - since it costs money to do so). We got this on the 4th November and is apparently the only thing we have bounced for that site. It must have been explicitly addressed in this manner since tons of other mail for mevax1.tcd.ie is wending it safely. Moral. Please mail to postmaster before costing the world mucho dollars and incidentally spreading false information.
