[comp.mail.misc] Mail to Ireland via ukc: sorry, ukc!

pedmond@a.gp.cs.cmu.edu (Patrick Edmond) (11/16/88)

A few days ago I posted a message asking for advice on routing messages to
Ireland:

>Now, the problem: just the other day I had a message bounced by ukc, who
>apparently are only forwarding mail from 'authorised' users. My question,
>therefore: is ukc the only gateway to Irish sites or does there exist <X> such
>that
>	mcvax!<X>!mevax1.tcd.ie!user@uunet.uu.net
>will do the trick?

I received a number of replies with helpful suggestions (thank you all!);
one person at UKC (University of Kent at Canterbury), however, felt I was
unjustly criticising their site and damaging its reputation. I wasn't
conscious of doing so in my message, but in any case I offer my sincere
apologies: I certainly didn't intend to cast any aspersions on UKC.

(For those interested, it turned out that the original problem was with the
manner in which one of the sites on this side of the Atlantic (_not_ uunet)
had massaged the address field before passing it on to mcvax and ukc, and this
was what caused an authentication error there.
Contrary to my implication, then, UKC is still forwarding mail to Ireland as
always. Sorry for the hassle, ladies and gentlemen.)
