I'm currently playing around with the PCMAIL protocols (RFC1056), which is a POP-like thing, but uses a different state theory. PC client sources and binaries exist, as do Unix repository and client code, through anonymous FTP to allspice.lcs.mit.edu. Supposedly, both sides are complete, but we'll see. What would be nice is a Macintosh front end as well, but it currently looks like either I'll have to develop my own if none exists anywhere, or just use some vendor thing like Quick*Mail.
