Hello. I have a few (probably real simple) questions for the net in regards to mail, mailers, etc. I thought I was starting to get the hang of things, but lacking a guru to assist me with my system, I turn to the net for some guidance. I have seen many different things mentioned recently and was wondering if any one could shed some light on their meaning and how they work with each other in terms that a neophyte would understand. The terms I am referring to are: SMTP smail / sendmail mh POP (post office protocol) NNTP lmail The system I am using is UNIX V.3 on a 80386. Which of the above should be running? I know my system is running smail and sendmail, and when I ran strings on them to get a version number for each, I got two version numbers/dates out of them. They are: for smail: 2.2 (smail) 1/26/87 2.3 (smail) 1/26/87 2.3 (smail) 1/28/87 for sendmail: 5.51 (Berkeley) 5/02/86 5.14 (Berkeley) 1/10/86 Are these the current versions? If not, how would one obtain the most current sources or binaries? How do the other things mentioned interact with these? I know these questions may be insulting the intelligence of some of you, but for me, they are important. Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give. -Jo ps. You'll probably see quite a few postings of questions from me on UNIX/C in the future. Why? Well, the net has been more help than my professors at the local college here. When I asked one why they do not offer C as a programming course, he replied, "Well, C is a language just becoming popular on UNIX systems, when it becomes more widespread, we may decide to offer it." ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | Joseph E Poplawski (Jo) US Mail: 1621 Jackson Street | | Cinnaminson NJ 08077 | | UUCP:..!rutgers!rochester!moscom!telesci!fantasci!jep | | ..!princeton!telesci!fantasci!jep | | ..!pyrnj!telesci!fantasci!jep Phone: +1 609 786-8099 home | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
