Could some please give me some pointers to where a standard might exist that says that I should parse addresses like this: node1!node2!node3!user@machine.xxx.edu [ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ] go to machine.xxx.edu first. instead of node1!node2!node3!user@machine.xxx.edu [ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ] pass this address to node1 first I always thought that the first was always the way to go, but I have seen mailers at Bell Labs doing differently. Which should always have highest precedence? Please feel free to point me to any RFCs that contain this information. Please respond to m here at udel with "matthews@udel.edu". I don't always get a chance to keep up with all of the newsgroups.

From article <9293@louie.udel.EDU>, by matthews@udel.EDU (John Matthews): * node1!node2!node3!user@machine.xxx.edu * [ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ] go to machine.xxx.edu first. ...or * node1!node2!node3!user@machine.xxx.edu * [ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ^ ] pass this address to node1 first RFC976 sez that mixed mode addresses should be avoided, but that the first example above is the prefered one. -Mike Marshall hubcap@hubcap.clemson.edu
