Anyone know what the status of Smail 3.0 is? It seems to have been in "almost ready" state for quite some time. I would like to have the ability to pipe mail to different mailers or processes, but dont what or need the complexity of sendmail and the .cf file. Any help appreciated. -Gary Sanders (n8emr) gwspc!gws (work) n8emr!gws (home) -- Gary Sanders (N8EMR) AT&T Bell Labs, Columbus Ohio gws@cblph.att.com 614-860-5965

According to gws@cbnews.ATT.COM (Gary W. Sanders): > Anyone know what the status of Smail 3.0 is? >It seems to have been in "almost ready" state for quite some time. Quite. I've been an "Alpha tester" for some months now. I'd like nothing better than to release it to the world, but the authors have some heavy modifications in the works, and it's their call. >I would like to have the ability to pipe mail to different >mailers or processes, but dont what or need the complexity of >sendmail and the .cf file. Any help appreciated. I'm sure that Gary isn't the only one who wants to do this. I think I can help. The Deliver program, in conjunction with Smail 2.5, should take care of most of the things UUCP-only sites would want to do. (Not all, but most.) You configure Smail 2.5 to hand local mail to Deliver. Deliver's behavior is controlled by "delivery files" -- shell scripts. The neat part is that the delivery files have available to them the message header and body, so they can pipe one or both to any program, in addition to performing aliasing or routing or anything else. Deliver 2.0 is in the comp.sources.unix queue. If you _really_ can't wait, send me E-Mail. -- You may redistribute this article only to those who may freely do likewise.
