My employer is considering replacing the proprietary local area network e-mail package we use. This posting is a request for information about what alternatives might be available. We have about 500 '286 and '386 machines running one version or another of System V *NIX, networked via Ethernet running a networking package called "Fusion" (tm). We use Fusion's XNS product. In addition, we have 4 VAXen (one in a separate city, linked via 56kb circuits), running BSD; Fusion also runs on them. Finally, we have a few Suns that do use TCP/IP and a handful of protocol convertors which connect the Suns to the rest of the LAN. The mailer we use is a non-RFC-822-standard package and is, as noted, a proprietary one which replaced /bin/mail on the workstations and BSD Mail on the VAXen. We are not now connected to the Internet. What mail delivery agent(s) might work in such an environment? (We do, of course, have BSD sendmail, although the current mailer does not use it.) What user agents will run on the '286/'386 workstations? How would routing occur? Are the System V versions of sendmail reliable? At this point, we do NOT expect to be able to move from use of XNS to TCP/IP, We probably won't be able to upgrade the '286 *NIX, which is System V.2. Naturally, we hope to be able to run something in this environment that won't require replacement of our existing network software. And, we'd prefer to use something like 'elm' which is widely available at low (i.e., no) cost. Thanks in advance. Please reply via e-mail and I will summarize. -- UUCP: ...uunet!cp1!aplcen!wb3ffv!fallst!tkevans INTERNET: tkevans%fallst@wb3ffv.ampr.org OTHER: ...!attmail!fallst!tkevans Tim Evans 2201 Brookhaven Court, Fallston, MD 21047 (301) 965-3286
