[comp.mail.misc] UNIX - Novell cc:Mail Link -> Summary

jh34607@suntc.UUCP (john howell) (08/24/89)

I posted the subject in article <113@suntc.UUCP>:

>Does anyone know of a UNIX mail (sendmail) to cc:Mail running on a Novell
>server?
>
>What I really want is something that runs on the Sun 3/160 (or the
>Novell server) and takes unix mail from sendmail (local network or uucp
>on the Sun 3/160) and sends/receives from cc:Mail.

>I've gotta believe a lot of people have this same problem and I hope
>someone has actually solved it.

Based on the number of replies of people with solutions (6) and number
of replies of people with the same problem (5) I thought there would be
interest in the summary of solutions. They follow:

Al Marshall at Proteon has written a C program that will translate ccmail
to smtp and vice versa. We use it inhouse with ~200 PCs, ~50 MACs (MAC
ccmail), 50 Apollo workstations, 9 Symbolics machines, and a Sequent.
All it takes is a PC with one ethernet card, and one novell card of any
flavor. There is at least one *nix machine on one particular ethernet, so
we use that one, and our PCs are also on ethernet, so our gateway has two
ethernet cards in it. Works great. Mail me and I can email you the
sources if you are interested.

There is an SMTP gateway available. Contact the cc:Mail people.

If I were you, I would call Richard Kinoshita at ccMail and ask him to send you
their document titled "A Summary of cc:Mail Internet Gateways." Number two in
the list is mention of a SMTP product from Proteon. You need the cc:Mail
"Export" product to do the deed...

Have you thought about putting up a TCP/IP package on one of the Novell
clients so that you can "gateway" mail to your sendmail? A plausible
scenerio:

[SMTP (TCP/IP) hosts] ---- [SMTP/CC:MAIL gateway] ---- [CC:MAIL hosts]

The gateway can be built (and has been built for things like 3Com's mail
package) using Phil Karn's TCP/IP package (this is known as the KA9Q internet
package) and Deskview. Basically, you need a task that watches for mail on
the gateway PC and then forward's it on to CC:MAIL. Likewise, this task should
check for mail in the CC:MAIL spooling directory, and kick it to Phil's
package for sending via SMTP.

The logical picture of the software on the gateway PC:

[KA9Q server] --- [Forwarding Task] --- [CC:MAIL server]
               ^ ^
               | |
               ---- spool queue's ----

This description may not be clear enough. If you would like, feel free
to call me and we can discuss this more.

John,
There are currently three solutions available to get from cc:Mail to
Unix mail. They differ mainly on transport protocols. One solution uses
the UUCP protocols and uses rs-232 links. Another uses SMTP and an Ethernet
link. The third requires MMDF on your Unix host and uses the phonenet
protocol (also rs-232 based). All of the above solutions have been
developed by customers of cc:Mail. cc:Mail is currently developing a fully
supported SMTPLink as one of their gateways. If you need more information
give me a call at: (415) 321-0430 x128.
