[comp.mail.misc] Internet<->TELENET or BITNET<-> TELENET

MICHAL@kuhub.cc.ukans.edu (Michal Chmielewski) (10/26/89)

Need to know if there exists a gateway from Internet or Bitnet or
Arpanet to TELENET and vice versa. I think I have heard that TELENET
is a commercial network which leases its services to interested parties.
Any gurus out there with a blinding mind ?

-Merlin

PS. Incidently, if the above is true, the e-mail addresses within
TELENET are specified somewhat like bitnet adr ?

I just sent an article out about the connection here to TELENET (that person
was asking about the OMNET service). If you missed it, you can request
information from:

		     Intermail-Request@Intermail.ISI.EDU

TELENET is a commercial network run by Sprint (a GTE company?). It does sell
time to third parties. OMNET is just one of several.

Several mail gateways between the ARPA Internet and BITNET exist. The
current default is CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU (that's their Internet name, I don't know
the BITNET). The basic syntax going to BITNET is:

		      user%bitnet-host@cunyvm.cuny.edu

CUNYVM.CUNY.EDU takes it and sends it out to BITNET as user@bitnet-host.

The reverse is should be similar. Your local BITNET postmaster should know.

If you're on BITNET and wish to send to TELENET, your best bet is the Simple
Forwarding Header method available with the Commercial Mail Relay (described
today in a previous message).
