We use CE Software's QuickMail for all Macintosh mail within the
Institute. The Mail*Link program, originally from Starnine, provides a
bridge between QuickMail and other mailers with an SMTP link.
QuickMail provides a first-name and a last-name part of an address and
joins them with an underscore, eg., Fred's QM address: Fred Bloggs goes
to Fred_Bloggs. We decided when we first started to use QuickMail that
we would use only its first-name field to contain names of the type
<firstname>.<lastname>
Mail*Link rewrites addresses going from Quickmail as:
<user>.<mailcentre>@<mail_link_bridge_name>.<domain>
where <user> is the the user name, eg. Fred.Bloggs etc. Notice that it
uses a '.' in the address to mark the start of its mailcentre field.
Is there any way to convince Mail*Link to use a character other than '.'
to separate the user and host names? For our purposes, a '%' would be
more appropriate. The form: <user>@<mailcentre>.<bridge>.<domain> would
be preferrable but I suspect that this would be much harder.
