[comp.mail.misc] Pointers sought to mail and news info

jgc@spencer.cs.uoregon.edu (James Gerald Campbell) (08/07/90)

We currently develop SW on a network of PCs w/ DOS. We are starting
to move to a Unix network, and I need to educate myself. I use a
local university account to get mail and news, and would like to
setup these services on our in house system. We will be buying some
Suns and starting to run some unix version on our PCs.
(Recommendations? SCO? Interactive?)

I am looking for pointers to sources of information (news groups,
documents at ftp sites, references to books, magazines to subscribe
to, people who would be willing to answer email questions) about how
to connect a news feed, how to hook up a mail feed, how to register
our machines as Internet adresses, how to assign a name to our
internet address, what mail program to use ... you get the picture.

Some specific questions:

What are RFC's (sp?). I see them referenced as references for mail
	protocols and so forth.

Is there a description of the functions of mail headers?

How about a pointer to some book like "Every thing you ever wanted to
know about being a Unix system manager"?

Thanks for any help anyone can give. I don't want you to explain
things to me, I just want to know where I can look to find it myself.
I am currently a competent unix user, but now I need to know enough
to make good decisions on spending money and time.
