I am considering setting up a mail list on my mac at home. I currently run two such lists from my unix workstation at work. One of them is actually work related, the other is more closely related to a hobby. It is the "hobby" list that I am considering moving home. My problem is that I am almost totally ignorant on how these things work. What I need is some advice on how to set up one of the babys on a 512+ Macintosh. Let me first describe the configuration that I currently have running. Hardware: Intergraph wks, 16 megs, 15 mips, 670 meg internal hard drive. This is connected thru ethernet to our central information resource which makes hourly connections to uunet. Software: Sendmail. In the login directory there is a ".forward" file. When the .forward is present, any incoming mail is automatically readdressed and sent out to all of the addresses listed in this file. The system operates with almost no input from me. Problem: I am beginning to get nervous about the amount of connect time that my personal mail list is generating. I would like to move the operation home before it begins to cost my company any money, or gets noticed. Getting noticed wont happen for a while - I think - because the company generates tons of email. This is the configuration that I want to move to: Hardware: Mac 512 (enhanced to 800k memory, 800k drive). No hard drive. 5 meg bernoulli (ick) Apple personal modem 1200? Dedicated phone line to be added. Software: I have Red Ryder and MacTerminal. Haven't noticed any email capabilities with these. Question: Whatsitgonnatake? Hard drive for sure - which one? Software: is it going to be as easy to maintain as my current set-up? I envision a once or twice a day hookup to uunet. The system should operate completely automatically. Is this realistic? What kind of address will I have? Recommended modem? Etc. Jim Albea albeaj@ingr.com
