3 Packages are generally available in the public domain/shareware world.

1. Waffle 1.62
Waffle is a program that can do mail, USENET news, and act as a full
fledged bbs of its own. It has come highly recommended by a number of
     users.

     Available by:
anonymous ftp from simtel20.army.mil, file is PD2:<MSDOS2.BBS>WAF162.ZIP
anonymous ftp from wuarchive.wustl.edu, in /mirror/msdos/bbs/waf162.zip

also available from the augthor, suggested registration is $35.

2. FSUUCP
Don't know too much about it, other than that its been suggested to me
     by a number of respondents.

    Available by:
anonymous ftp from polyslo.calpoly.edu as fsuucp11.zip (in /pub)

      From the Author (cambler@polyslo.calpoly.edu)
         Fubar Systems 805-54-FUBAR (BBS number)
         FSUUCP Request 805-544-9234 (Voice Support)
         1525 Mill #6
         San Luis Obispo, CA 93401-2543

3. UFGATE
Don't know much either, except that it runs the usual uucp routines,
handles importing, exporting of UUCP messages, and news, auto deletion
     of old news, addressing etc.

Available by download from Late Night Software BBS
        1-415-695-0759
     Also from the author (lns@f555.n125.z1.fidonet.org)

Other respondents also mentioned UUPC, although I don't know how to get it

So far I have only installed waffle and have not yet had the opportunity
to run as a site yet (have not set up a mail/news feed locally yet). But
in general I found the documentation to be kind of overwhelming and
somewhat confusing for the uninitiated, also seems like a lot of trouble
to go through if only want news/mail and not to set up as a full blown bbs.
The jury is still out though.

I have yet to download FSUUCP or UFGATE (1200 baud is maddeningly slow!).
Will keep people posted.

In the mean time, I would appreciate e-mail comments on the above
software, especially as concerns installation, ease of use, flexibility,
communicating w. the host site, and other little details like that.
