A relative of mine in St. Paul Minnesota, a retired school teacher, would like to be able to send and receive electronic mail from her home. So on her behalf, I'm looking for a commercial e-mail service that is accessible via a LOCAL PHONE CALL from St. Paul. She needs one with a gateway to Internet mail and she'll use it rather infrequently, i.e. once per week, tops, and usually 1-2 times a month, so it would be best if the service had a low fixed monthly cost. I'm vaguely aware of Compuserve and MCI mail, but I've never used any of these services. I don't know about costs, ease of use, of any other similar issues. I have read some mail in which copmuserve is described as expensive (e.g. spelled compu$erve). If you have PERSONAL experience with one or more of the following networks, then I'd like to hear your recommendations and comments. Please E-mail your replies to the address below, and I'll summarize to this newsgroup. compuserve commercial time-sharing service connect Connect Professional Information Network (commercial) fidonet PC-based BBS network geonet GeoNet Mailbox Systems (commercial) mci MCI's commercial electronic mail service telemail Telenet's commercial mail service My thanks to frotz@dri.com (Frotz) who passed along an nth-generation copy of a file from one John J. Chew, listing networks with internet gateways (among others). Thanks, Frotz, for that usefull service. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Nelson Bolyard nelson@sgi.COM {decwrl, sun}!sgi!whizzer!nelson Disclaimer: Views expressed herein do not represent the views of my employer. -----------------------------------------------------------------------------
