Where might I find references to the currently available White Pages software
systems?
I know about Andrew (not much), and X.500, but I have only heard of Profile,
and the work being done at Purdue.
Who has packages available NOW? How hard is it to bring up just the WP modules
in the Andrew software? Who is currently selling X.500 code?
Thanks in advance!

There is a distribute WhitePages system running on the Internet that contains some hundreds of thousands of entries that come from the internal phonebooks of many organizations. For information on this service send email to wp-info@psi.com Which will generate an automatic response. Or you can just telnet into wp.psi.net and login as fred, and use the "help screens". There are several reports available (in Postscript) via anonymous ftp on uu.psi.com in wp/ps/report-{1,2,3}.ps. The code is based on ISODE not Andrew. It depends on what you're looking for in a White Pages. The White Pages part of Andrew isn't hard to get running by itself, but it doesn't interoperate with the ISODE-based stuff. They serve totally different goals. Andrew's WP, loosely, is meant to replace the local /etc/passwd and /usr/lib/aliases, as well as supporting fuzzy name lookup and the like. As I understand the ISODE-based stuff, it's meant for locating individuals that may be at any of many separately-administered locations. Craig

That is reasonably accurate synopsis of the WP for ISODE. A couple of other highlights are: 1) it supports soundex, thereby matching smith/smythe etc.. 2) it supports images One of the interesting proposals (by NYU actually) is to include maps under the organization information (@o=) and under the organizational unit section (@ou=). This might allow a person visiting NYU to get a map of how to get to NYU through a map of Manhatten, and then to a specific department through a picture of what the building looks like.
