[comp.mail.misc] Aargh! Can't seem to send email to Fidonet!

alex@bilver.uucp (Alex Matulich) (02/25/91)

I have been trying to send email to fidonet, and have failed miserably
in all my attempts. I am using John Chew's recent article on inter-network
mail as a guide. In the example on mailing from internet to fido, if
the recipient is

John Smith at 1:2/3.4

then the address I am supposed to use is

john.smith@p4.f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org

There are two problems. The fido address I need to send to is not a point,
so the address is actually of the form 1:2/3 instead of 1:2/3.4. What
do I do in this case?

The second problem is that the mailer here will only accept the 'bang' type
of addresses of the form ...site1!site2!site3!username instead of the
username@site form. I can send to uunet from here, but uunet is sending
back every attempt I make.

Please help! Thanks.

Use john.smith@f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org.

Try stjhmc.fidonet.org!3!2!1!john.smith.

Tricky at best. If his mailer reaches uunet, and since uunet runs
pathalias, why not just use uunet!f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org!John.Smith ?

Can someone tell me what "fidonet" is, actually? Seems to be some kind
of BBS news server but I'm not sure. --Kees

Then it would be: john.smith@f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org

That's tougher. You'd need to know which gateway the mail must go thru.

If there is no point, you leave it off of the Internet domain
address for FidoNet. Ie: John.Smith@f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org

   Try:

   uunet!f3.n2.z1.fidonet.org!John.Smith
