[comp.mail.misc] PROFS, VNET & IBM Information Network

nsdec@vnet.ibm.com (Norm deCarteret 438-3994) (03/27/91)

Some of the information passed on has been right, but unfortunately mixed in
with some misconceptions, so I'll try to recover some ground.

PROFS is really an IBM office systems product (now revamped as OfficeVision)
and offers E-mail, scheduling, document distribution etc. It is dependent
on underlying VM systems components, like RSCS, so PROFS can be used to send
mail anywhere, including Internet, if the system itself supports it.
(the feature of PROFS that enables domain addressing is called Extended Mail).

IBM has many gateways to the Internet, some full function, some limited.
The one for general access by any IBMer whose manager approves their request
is the one this mail was sent through, vnet.ibm.com. Technical Vitality
is generally viewed as sufficient and good reason for requesting access,
so since May 1990 there hasn't been any real hindrance to any employee
to sending and receiving Internet E-mail (vnet.ibm.com _is_ SMTP only).

vnet.ibm.com is managed by the IBM Information Network, based in Tampa FL.
IIN was formed as an IBU 10 years ago, but has been a part of IBM/CS
(Communications Systems) for awhile now. Customers don't pay megabucks
and IIN is significantly smaller than a billion dollar organization.

There are _no_ customers connected to or running on IBMs VNET ('IBMs vast
internal network'). There _are_ thousands of customers connected to the
IBM Information Network, that's what we're in business for...we have our
own national and international network. IIN customers _can_ talk to
IBMers or with other customers _if_ both parties have agreed to, and put
an entry in their table...ABC Towels can't talk with XYZ Soap Inc if XYZ
Soap hasn't said, sure! The next question is, can XYZ Soap Inc send mail
through IIN to Internet? Not yet, but it's possible.

I hope that clears up all the questions.

Apologies if this is a duplicate, but I haven't seen the original
mailing last Tuesday posted yet, so I'm trying another route.
