[comp.mail.misc] Need info on telemail

tbc@juniper04.cray.com (Tom Craig) (04/11/91)

Does anyone know anything about a mail system called "telemail"? A friend of
mine who works at the Science Museum of Minnesota just got access to email
through telemail. She is able to exchange mail with Palmer Station in
Antarctica, fer cryin out loud, so they must go through the internet
somewhere. Is this a commercial system that only allows the exchange
of mail between clients, or is there a way to get mail to and from an
internet site (specifically, here at Cray)? I have a hardcopy of a
message that came from Palmer Station to the museum, and the only header
information seems to be the address - myfriend@telemail. I tried to send
mail to that address and also myfriend@telemail.bitnet (just for the heck
of it). No luck. Does this ring any bells with anyone? What information
should I be trying to dig up to enable us to exchange email?

Email info to tbc@cray.com, please. I'm not a regular reader of this group,
though I will try to monitor it for the next week or so.

Thanks in advance,
Tom Craig

The mail system called "telemail" is now "SprintMail" and a few different
relays between it an the Internet exist. The preferred one is Sprint own,
Sprint.COM. A less functional, but more consistent*, one is through the
Commercial Mail Relay. NASA ARC also had one for in-house use.

Sprint.COM uses an X.400-like addressing scheme. The best way to find out
your friends address in the eyes of Sprint.COM is to have her send you a
message so you can see the "From" field. (For how to do this, she should ask
her local reps or see the on-line help.) Mail through Sprint.COM is
store-and-forward.

The CMR also uses a store-and-forward method; however, it is visible to the
user. Mail is "relayed" through a mailbox on SprintMail. Information on the
CMR is available from "intermail-request@intermail.isi.edu."

The address you mentioned in your article would work, after processing, with
the CMR if, and *only* if, it were on the *same* SprintMail host as the CMR
relay mailbox.

Your best bet is Sprint.COM. Good luck.

*As recently as February 1991, Sprint.COM and SprintMail did not use
compatible versions of X.400. One example is the country code: Sprint.COM
only accepted "US" while SprintMail used "USA." One hopes that they will fix
such things; however, one must not hold ones breath....
