[comp.mail.misc] smail 2.5 problem

soley@ontenv.UUCP (Norman S. Soley) (09/13/88)

Running on the NCR Tower XP Smail 2.5 core dumps when I try to use
include files in the alias file. Has anyone else experienced this?
Any suggestions on what to look for?

Probably from outside smail. If you send a message addressed like this:

	To: user@some.dom.ain, another@some.where.else

then your user agent may be passing the comma to smail in the envelope
addresses (I know mailx on my system has this problem). Smail does
nothing special to get rid of such a comma, but perhaps your previous
(non-smail) MTA did get rid of it.

The fix may be as simple as omitting the commas when you type the
addresses in the To: line. Smail will insert commas in the header if
your user agent doesn't, but you don't want commas in the envelope
addresses.

I wish that was it. In the above example I was mailing to one
address "kriss@uwslh.slh.wisc.edu", with no other addresses
tacked on.

Sounds like a decent idea. I think I've solved the problem (at least,
I haven't gotten any bounced message recently) by ripping out all of
smail and mush, rm'ing all the mail-related stuff, re-installing the
original Xenix mail and execmail prog's, then re-installing smail.
Iterated on said procedure 5 times, and eventually everything
came together.:-) /2
