Are the uucp maps somehow broken? Starting about a week ago we have been having problems with building the uucp map database (mapdb) using pathalias. The problem is that while pathalias is running it runs out of memory (swap space). The following is a message from the LOGFILE: ./pathalias: out of memory (8168k allocated); notify the authorities (This was run on a 2 MIP system with 16MB memory, 32MB swap.) (Note, this has been running fine for the last year and a half.) When we saw this we decided to move it to a 5 MIP system with 16MB memory and 60MB swap. I allowed pathalias to run all night and found that it grew to about 30MB (found by running ps and checking the SZ). and it was still running this morning. The system was paging at a very high rate and pathalias was only taking up about 2% of the CPU (I assume this is due to pathalias waiting on pages.) I took the system down this morning, added 16MB for a total of 32 MB of memory and now pathalias is running at 100% CPU and has been for a few hours. Is our version of pathalias too old? Did something change/break recently? Any hints? System details: First system: Sony NEWS 841 (2MIP), 16MB Mem, 32MB swap. Second (current) system: Sony NEWS 1850 (5MIP), 32MB Mem, 72MB swap. OS: NEWS OS 3.3 (Vanilla BSD 4.2 with X, nfs additions.) Pathalias info: Version (sccsid from config.h): 9.1 87/10/04 Command format (from the /usr/local/uucp_maps/unpackmaps file) : On the uucp relay system (sonyusa): ./pathalias local u.* d.* | sort > newdb On the 1850 system : ./pathalias -l sonyusa local u.* d.* | sort > newdb Any help would be greatly appreciated. The latest version of pathalias is from October 1990; I'd recommend
fetching a fresh copy from its home (see below) or your favorite
network service provider.
