[comp.mail.misc] news2mail gateway

george@hyper.lap.upenn.edu (George "Sir Lleb" Zipperlen) (05/24/91)

I have just installed the newsgate software to provide a gateway between
the funky-music mailing list and the rec.music.funky newsgroup.
Newsgate is a very nice package, if somewhat lacking in documentation.

The intent is to automatically send messages from the mailing list to
the newsgroup, but to moderate the flow from the newsgroup back to the
mailing list.

The automatic mail2news is working fine, I especially like the way it
filters out subscribe/unsubscribe messages.

I'm having some problems with news2mail, though.

One problem is the huge "From:" lines generated from the news article's
"Path:" header. These are causing some mailers to bounce the article.
Is there a way to use the article's "From: " or "Reply-To: " header
instead?

A second problem is that hyper.lap.upenn.edu is an nntp client, not a
news site, so I'm currently invoking news2mail manually from a trn
macro. This is fine as long as I'm around, but I'd like a way to store
news articles when I'm away, for later selection. Is there any simple
way of doing this, short of getting a partial news feed?

I've considered writing a a fairly simple cron invoked program which
would store a time stamp, then periodically connect to the campus nntp
server, ask for "newnews rec.music.funky <since that time>", and stash
the articles somewhere. Does anything like this already exist?

The third problem that I see is potential article duplication in the
mailing list. There's no problem on the newsgroup side, because I use a
seperate address for "real" part of the mailing list, and inews would
trap duplicates by Message-ID anyhow. My guess is that most gateways
a fully bi-directional, and count on inews to prevent duplication on
both sides.

In case it's relevant: hyper.lap is a Gould Powernode running UTX/32
(which is basically bsd4.3), and sendmail 5.54/4.7. It does not use
uucp, pathalias, or any of that stuff, we forward all non-local mail to
upenn's mail gateway.

Thanks for any assistance.
