I think that we are making much ado about nothing when we decry having only a moderated "comp.sys.mac". After my previous posting on this subject (<16406@mordor>), an article by Robert Elz arrived at my site which said that the unmoderated Mac and Amiga newsgroups were not going away -- the new:old list that Mark Horton posted was out of date and inaccurate in this respect. This, coupled with the fact that "comp.sys.mac" was created now (although the "mod" renaming won't take place for some time yet), convinced me that my fears were groundless. BTW, I'm not a foe of moderated newsgroups; in fact, I prefer them. My concern with respect to the termination of "net.micro.mac" was that there was no advance warning (and therefore no time to set up the moderated alternatives). This lack of advance warning is quite understandable given that apparently no such termination is planned. -- John Bruner (S-1 Project, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory) MILNET: jdb@mordor [jdb@s1-c.ARPA] (415) 422-0758 UUCP: ...!ucbvax!decwrl!mordor!jdb ...!seismo!mordor!jdb

I would like to put in my vote for UNmoderated newsgroups. I am not currently an active Mac programmer and thus I subscribe net.micro.mac/ comp.sys.mac for product rumors and reviews and because of an academic interest in user interfaces and software engineering. The high noise level of an unmoderated group allows me to see the full range of opinion. Once in a while it produces discussions that degenerate badly but on the whole it produces a lively forum. I find the moderated groups a little dry for what I am looking for. Ethan Munson CS grad student UC Berkeley munson@ernie.berkeley.edu
