We are currently having a problem in the comp.sys.{amiga,atari,mac,...} groups that is being amplified by a feature of the current news software. To be specific, when an a follow-up article is created it automatically includes all the cross-posted groups of the original in the followup, and if the poster does not realize this the followup will be silently cross posted to all of these groups. Right now, we are going into the third wind of a 'my computer is better than you computer' war, occasioned when some misguided soul cross-posted a request for opinions to 5 or 6 groups. The resulting n-th generation flames are still being cross-posted to all these groups in many cases, tempers are growing short, and noise volume is going through the roof. This would have all died down weeks ago if the software would just ask 'ARE YOU SURE YOU WANT TO POST YOUR MESSAGE TO ALL THESE GROUPS?' Note that I have no objection to cross-posting, it's just that I feel that the default behavior of the posting software is counter-productive when a cross-posting to n groups generates kn! followups... -- George Robbins - now working for, uucp: {ihnp4|seismo|rutgers}!cbmvax!grr but no way officially representing arpa: cbmvax!grr@seismo.css.GOV Commodore, Engineering Department fone: 215-431-9255 (only by moonlite)
