Three weeks ago, I proposed the creation of "comp.org.usrgroup", replacing "usrgroup.all". At present, I have received 92 YES votes and 2 NO votes. One week remains for voting, and the required support will likely be given. I had expected more enthusiastic general support for the net reduction of eight newsgroups. I wish to thank all those who have sent their votes and comments, including those active in standards work, the backbone site administrators, the newsgroup moderators, and the overseas /usr/group affiliate directors and members. Judging by the comments I have read, I would guess that the usrgroup.all hierarchy has had a rather limited distribution, especially outside North America. Many voters commented favourably on the "net simplification" resulting from the merging of the usrgroup.all newsgroups. Several /usr/group members wrote enthusiastic comments about /usr/group's presence in the real "International Network of UNIX Users". Both people who voted NO gave reasons for doing so. The first was against increasing the number of newsgroups, and I agree with him, though comp.org.usrgroup is an amalgamation and a net reduction of newsgroups. The second said "since the usrgroup.all newsgroups have so little traffic, there is no clear need to create comp.org.usrgroup." I agree, and hold that the low use is a good reason to get rid of usrgroup.all. The newsgroup "comp.org.usrgroup" will replace all nine of the usrgroup.all groups. If you have thought about voting and haven't voted yet -- because it's obviously such a good proposal that enough others will vote for it, perhaps? -- now is a good time to send me your YES vote. I didn't crosspost to comp.misc and comp.std.internat before -- I have done so this time. Follow-up articles will still be directed to news.groups. BTW, as a bonus, perhaps we can absorb comp.std.internat next? :-) -- Peter Renzland "Data, don't babble!"
