In article <29083@yale-celray.yale.UUCP>, shefter-bret@CS (Bret A. Shefter) complains about Gene Spafford "retroactively" changing the rules, and how now poor Bret's stomach is so ill. For your information, Bret, USENET is not a mathematical theorem. It is not a program specification. It is not a Platonic ideal. It *is* a bunch of people and a bunch of machines. The "rules" have not been retroactively changed. Usenetopia is still in the eye of the beholder. And it always will be. > Jesus Christ, didn't anybody here ever read *Animal Farm*??? Yup. Great book, but not very relevant. Let me suggest you read _Please Don't Eat the Daisies_. The title refers to a rule that the "authorities" never thought of spelling out beforehand, and then "retroactively" intro- duced. And I strongly recommend you see that modern classic sci-fi flick "Morons from Outer Space": it has that quality in common with all Great Books, Film, Theater, Comics, Art, and USENET Postings: that you, Bret Shefter, could probably learn something profound about yourself from it. >Oh sure, I know you don't care, because I'm only a lowly news *reader*,... Gene doesn't care because you are too trivial a slug for him to worry over. I think Gene's actions over the years prove that he cares a lot more about us lowly news readers than you'll ever get to realize. (Thanks, Gene &c!) Thanks for the vote of confidence in Gene, Matthew. Nice posting! (If anyone wonders why I bother posting something like this, consider by way of comparison the usual kind of comment weemba gets; I calls 'em as I sees 'em.)
