[news.groups] New netnews hierarchy "me"

matt@oddjob.UChicago.EDU (Yes, *THAT* Matt Crawford) (06/14/88)

New hierarchies, unlike new newsgroups in the mainstream hierarchy,
do not need to be voted on. All who want to join them may do so.

What the net needs, in my opinion, is a hierarchy in which the people
can have whatever they want. In token of "the me decade", I call
this new hierarchy "me". In the "me" newsgroups, you can create any
newsgroup you want, for any reason. You can name a newsgroup after
yourself, your favorite TV show, or your pet goldfish. It can be
moderated or not, as you prefer. You need not publish a charter for
your newsgroup is you don't want to. All you have to do to join the
"me" net is to edit your "sys" file and add ",me" to the list of
distributions your own system subscribes to. You will then have
access to the "me" network, unrestricted by any overseers, cabals,
conspiracies or consortia.

NOTE: Do NOT add "me" to the entry for any of your neighboring
systems without the prior approval of the people responsible for
those systems. They will remain on the "not me" net until they
join.

Remember, the "me" network is what you make it. If any newsgroups
get created in it that YOU don't like, YOU can delete them. After
all, it's YOUR disk space.
