I would like to form a moderated newsgroup for X11 sources. It would be archived(any volunteers?). I proposed this to the backbone and got four positive replies(so far) and no negative ones. Rick Salz(moderator of comp.sources.unix) also thinks it would be a good idea. Here are some questions I expect and some answers to them. Why a newsgroup? It provides efficient and fairly reliable(more so than mail) means of distributing large sources. It would also provide access mainly to people who do not have Internet access. Are newsgroups a reliable way of distributing source. According to Rick Salz, a newsgroups that is widely carried is very reliable. Also the archives increase reliability. The could probably provide direct connections for archive sites to increase this reliability. Why not comp.windows.x? Their have already been many complaints about sources being posted their. Why not comp.sources.unix? Comp.sources.unix already has a large backlog, this would unload some of that. People that aren't interested in X sources wouldn't need to archive or transfer them. X sources are not necessarily specific to Unix. The moderator of comp.sources.x could test the sources to see if they work with X. Why not comp.sources.misc? Most of the reasons that apply to comp.sources.unix apply here. Who would moderate it? I volunteer to moderate it. If you think this is a good idea, send me mail. If you have any objections I will discuss them by mail our you can post them. Mike Wexler(wyse!mikew) Phone: (408)433-1000 x1330
