Since there is some debate over where to put the discussion-of-andrew newsgroup(s), I'll offer this... I agree with Nathaniel Borenstein (he's the lecturer for one of my classes, nice guy! :-) ) that andrew is an integrated system. While you probably could find enough places (comp.mail.andrew for the andrew messaging system, but that's really a technical discussion of mailer issues, not a forum for discussion of multimedia - as in sound, graphics, animation, multiple-levels-deep drawings... all of which are in the andrew message system; then there's comp.windows.andrew, but andrew isn't a windowing system, it's more a development tool as I see it; then there's comp.graphics.andrew for discussion of the andrew formats; then there's comp.protocols.andrew for the discussion of andrew netowrk security and filesystem...) but as Nathaniel said, things would fall through the cracks. The andrew project is so big as to require a slightly higher level of categorization so that all the discussion can be tracked and used more profitably by the readers. However, perhaps comp.andrew is a bit too high up in the heirarchy; that implies that type_of(andrew) =~ type_of(sys) =~ type_of(editors) etc... and I feel that andrew should perhaps be a category under * comp.sys * - not exactly right as "andrew" is a concept not a piece of hardware, or maybe under comp.society if andrew gets as big as its creators hope it will some day :-) Seriously, perhaps comp.sys.andrew is better to avoid creating too high level a new group. -- Jay Libove jl42@andrew.cmu.edu, libove@cs.cmu.edu, 5731 Centre Ave, Apt 3 gateway.sei.cmu.edu!libove!libove, jl42@andrew.BITnet, Pittsburgh, PA 15206 jl42@drycas.BITnet, psuvax1!pitt!darth!libove!libove, (412) 362-8983 or uunet!nfsun!libove!libove

I like the comp.sys.andrew suggestion, except that sys == hardware on the News. I preferred another suggestion, to create a new subgroup of comp called "env" (or even "environments"!) and make the new group comp.environments.andrew, paralleling things like comp.os.vms and comp.sys.transputer. Bill
