In article <20680@gryphon.COM>, richard@gryphon.COM (Richard Sexton) says: > >While this is no doubt a well intentioned idea, it adds a third >level of beurocracy. (Survey, discussion phase, vote) So what, everyone that wants to be involved is e-mailing me directly. I'm the one who decided to set aside some time to take this survey. I'm the one whose going to be doing all the group name vote tallying. Why does it bother you so? Are you afraid to find out that when the survey results are in, sci.aquaria may only receive 15 votes while all other group names choices that I listed may receive 200 more than that? :) I mean whats your complaint, really? >The ``(heated) discussion phase'' has all this data if you'd care >to extract it. I did read the postings (at least most of it), its getting difficult to keep pace with every bit of it since the debate is picking up steam. And from all that I have read plus my own personal views, I have made a decision on what I think the group should be called and on how I will vote. And I'm sure others have done the same. This includes those that have not participated in the debate either because they felt their views were already stated, or because they just don't wish to make their views known through discussion, but rather thru a vote. These same people may not even wish to participate in the survey (as well as those that are participating in the discussion), but wouldn't it be nice to know that there are twice or thrice as many people out there in netland that like the name "sci.aquaria" over anyone of the other choices. Or are you afraid to find out that when the survey results are in, sci.aquaria may only receive 15 votes while all other group names choices that I listed may receive 200 more than that? :) I mean whats your complaint, really? >Plus it has somethiung that Nelsons survey will >not accomplish, longish in depth reasons for the decisions >that poeple have made. That is true, but then surveys are not suppose to give longish in depth reasons about anything. They are merely a tool to collect data. Companies generally send out survey questionaires to their customers to find out how they feel about "x,y, and z". Richard, wouldn't it be nice to know that there are twice or thrice as many people out there in netland (other than those participating in the discussion) that might like the name "sci.aquaria" over anyone of the other choices. Or are you afraid to find out that when the survey results are in, sci.aquaria may only receive 15 votes while all other group names choices that I listed may receive 200 more than that? :) I mean whats your complaint, really? >While the number of people who want sci.aquaria is not a majority, >they are on the increase, and seem to me to have more well thought >out and articulate responses. Again, what about those who are not discussing this topic thru the net, because their reasons have already been stated on the net. When it comes time to hold the vote, will you ignore their votes just because they did not get involved in the heated discussion going on in alt.aquaria and news.groups? Richard, . . . no I won't say all that again. :) >Besides, where does bowing to the majority get you. Look who's >in the White House. > >Ha ha. Thats a joke son. Bowing to the majority (should it prove to be a majority), may get you your wish, that is, to have a "world" aquaria group created, albeit under a name that you personally may not be happy with. But then its your call. But, should the majority prefer "rec.aquaria" or one of the other choices over "sci.aquaria" and you still hold the vote for "sci.aquaria" and the majority votes against you then what would you have accomplinshed. Nothing. Except make the net wait another 6 months (I believe thats the required amount of time), before another vote for an aquarium newsgroup is allowed to take place. Richard, it might be best to hold the vote using the name most readers will be happy with, assuming that the survey shows overwhelmingly that there is a majority for one of those choices. On the other hand it might not be the best thing to use as a guide. thing to do. Like I said its just a very unofficial survey. Use the data I collect as you see fit. The discussion was started by you. The vote should be held by you. I'm just trying help summarize things a bit. By the way, what's your complaint, really? Nelson Broat
