[news.groups] Summary of opinions on whether to moderate soc.religion.islam

rdd@walt.cc.utexas.edu (Robert Dorsett) (10/11/89)

A week ago, I posted the existence of polling addresses on soc.culture.arabic
and news.groups, dealing with the moderation status of soc.culture.islam.
The options were to either send a message to
	islam-moderated@rascal.ics.utexas.edu
to support the moderation concept, or
	islam-non-moderated@rascal.ics.utexas.edu
To support the group initially being non-moderated.

There have been several publicly voiced opinions, supporting and arguing
against moderation, but I didn't count them. I also didn't count my own
opinion. Basalat and his three moderators didn't vote.

The following people supported the moderation of soc.religion.islam:

mnorazmi@ndcheg.cheg.nd.edu (Norazmi Mat Noh)
zam@ATHENA.MIT.EDU
sammy@harvard.harvard.edu (Sammy Akhmad)
woods@ncar.UCAR.EDU (Greg Woods)
ins_arm@JHMAIL.HCF.JHU.EDU:ins_arm@ (Roslan Mozaki)

Lastly,

werner@rascal.ics.UTEXAS.EDU (Werner Uhrig)

suggested that Padraig Houlahan and I act as moderators of the group. I
decline the suggestion, out of principle.

The following people opposed the moderation of soc.religion.islam or favored
the creation of the group as an *initially* undmoderated forum, as per my
suggestion.

dorai@rice.edu (Dorai Sitaram)
sohan+@andrew.cmu.edu (Sohan C. Ramakrishna-Pillai)
