I think the one thing which those outside of the Bay Area probably could have done (and which might have to be built into things like ATM software), would be to shut off any type of automatic modem (dial in) software like UUCP and news. Communications was bad in the initial stages. Email might be important later, but the vast majority of the public shouldn't have to compete with a stupid computer. Cellular phones proved handy for those who had access. Anyway for us here.... Mountain View had one death due to heart attack. Some of my favorite places in SC have been totalled (including that coffee house). Moffett Field had sustained some damage, etc. etc. Go help those who really need it. Thousands are in need of canned food and shelter [sounds like a lot but the Bay is Millions].
