This is a call for votes for the formation of a newsgroup called soc.roots.jewish. The purpose is as follows: 1) Providing all researchers of Jewish lines a means of networking with others on areas of particular interest to Jewish researchers to include.... A) Jewish Geography B) Identifying relatives lost in the Holocaust C) Finding relatives misplaced during the Holocaust D) Locating Yizkor Books and Landmanshaften from the old country 2) Providing researchers of Jewish lines access to research materials both in the US and abroad as they become available. 3) Providing researchers of Jewish lines a link to Israel where many of our relatives located during WWII as well as those currently immigrating from Russia (REFUSNIKS). 4) Providing an outlet for Holocaust survivors (the last generation) a means of identifying their families and preserving the historical information that has been lost or forgotten because of the horror and fear that these people have had to live. 5) Providing source and translation information in Hebrew, Yiddish and other Eastern European languages for the purpose of identifying family member with tombstone inscriptions in these languages as well as other family historical data. 6) Providing a means of encouraging Jewish researchers to use this medium to open up research opportunities that they currently have not been using. 7) Providing a link between genealogy and the history of the Jewish People. 8) Providing a link between the Jewish Genealogical Societies throughout the world. A Jewish Genealogy Conference currently exists on FIDONET and this newsgroup will be gateway'ed between the two newsgroup to open up an opportunity for more participation. I am receiving votes currently!

Please ask again after people have had a chance to argue the suggestion. I found out REAL quick I had goofed....and quickly re-iterated my
CALL for VOTES as a CALL for DISCUSSION and posted it here.
I have received lots of discussion on my MISTAKE but very little
discussion on the CALL for Discussion.
Here are some of the comments:
Most of the response has been very positive...in fact the only reason
I posted this here....the idea of cross posting between FIDONET and
USENET was that I received many inquiries from USENET folks about
how to access the Jewish Genealogy Conference.
Unfortunately, just recently being gateway'd into USENET I was totally
unaware of the procedure.
In fact I posted a note for help about 3 weeks before posting the
infamous CALL for VOTES which actually included a PURPOSE statement
on the proposed Newsgroup.
From what I am reading....I am wondering if the second post...the
correction ever got into the NET. I probably have a copy of it somewhere
here....and perhaps should re-post.
So....now with procedures in hand....I will again re-post a CALL
for Discussion of the proposed newsgroup.
Now back to discussion:
I have heard the discussion of including the newsgroup with soc.roots,
however, since the discussion is specific to Jewish Research...and
since we currently have a General Genealogy Conference on FIDONET...the
cross posting would not work unless the soc.roots group wants to
gateway with the NGC <National Genealogy Conference>. If there is
interest, I can provide the names of the people they should contact.
The other discussion has been very favorable.
With a few NO's thrown in for good measure.

The gateway in Houston was down about that time with hard disk problems....so I have to assume....that the reason my correction didn't get through and we are having this on-going discussion....! Ellen thanks for your support....let's see what to do from here!!!
