[news.groups] [Late] results of rec.aquarium counter-proposal vote

bryce@cbmvax.UUCP (Bryce Nesbitt) (11/28/89)

Enclosed are the results of the "rec.aquarium" vote. My intent was
to provide aquarium lovers an alternative to the controversial
"sci.aquaria" name. This goal failed.

The charter for the proposed rec.aquarium was identical to the old alt.aquaria
charter:
OLD:	alt.aquaria The aquarium & related as a hobby.
NEW:	rec.aquarium The aquarium & related as a hobby.

The sci.aquaria vote turned into a complete farce. Theoretically the
two calls for votes should have garnered similar total counts. However,
I did not hype the rec.aquarium vote. There were no massive cross-posting,
no giant block votes, no rash of forged postings, and no fantastic jokes in
rec.humor. Nobody even posted to alt.sex with the message "To keep alt.sex,
send a "YES on sci.aquaria" vote to...".

The sci.aquaria vote passed by (about) 40 votes; 38 of which came from
Richard Sexton's home site. I did not campaign at my own site.

A principal poster on the sci.aquaria issue even offered to provide me with
a set of forged YES votes with legal dates and user names! What crock!

---------------------For the net.historians-----------------------------------
(-: Oh, no!, "net.historians is namespace abuse!" :-)

This vote was remarkably will disciplined. Virtually all voters complied
with the requirement of a "real name". Most other vote counts contain
lots of votes with just an address like "somewhere!nowhere!podunk!jsfs".

Few YES voters said more than, "thanks", or "I agree". About half the
NO voters left comments. Half of those were to the effect of "I'm voting
NO because of [real or perceived] violations of net rules". Just 5 wanted
alternate names (rec.aquariums was first, rec.pets.aquarium second,
rec.aquaria third).

One YES came from the bogus sci.misc posting.

Try again with rec.aquaria.

It will pass.

You should expose this net.villain! His/her name should be entered into

Now I'm sure that *this* vote is official.

Sorry, no smileys accepted. There is reason to believe that in the
sci.aquaria vote all the YES votes listed as coming from psu were
forged. Friends of yours, Richard? :-(

Hoo-hah. What an idea.

Frankly, Bryce, I think that another one of me is a concept
for which the Universe is not quite ready. Most people
think that one was pleanty bad enough.

Oh well, life goes on, I suppose. This is sort of like that
deal where two congreepersons agree to vote in opposite
directions so that neither of them has to show up. Only
much more convenient.
