This is the second and final call for votes on the creation of the newsgroup: rec.sport.pro-wrestling. A brief summary: The call for discussion was issued under the name rec.arts.wrestling. A vote was held to determine what the name of the group should be, since there appeared to be no consensus. The vote was held using STV, and approval of the group was not implied by a vote for the name. More than 1/2 the respondents to the name vote picked rec.sport.pro-wrestling as their first choice. No one picked it as their last choice. The call for votes was issued for the name selected in the vote. Unfortunately, I've since lost it. I believe that it called for voting to end on the 21st of December. In any case, that is when I'll end it. The charter was for an unmoderated group to "Discuss the exhibition sport of professional wrestling." To vote, send mail to uunet!bywater!scifi!wrestle-yes or uunet!bywater!scifi!wrestle-no to vote yes or no, respectively. Internet users may be able to mail to: bywater!scifi!wrestle-yes@uunet.uu.net or bywater!scifi!wrestle-no@uunet.uu.net You may also send mail to njs@ibm.com, clearly indicating whether this is a yes vote or a no vote. And bitnet users may mail votes to njs at watson. I will individually acknowledge votes, but I will not be posting another mass ack. According to the guidelines, votes must be clear and unqualified. That it, they must clearly indicate a yes or no vote, and must not contain qualifications, like "I'd prefer if the name were...", or "I'd vote yes if the name were ...". The best way to indicate this is by including a statement such as: "I vote for the newsgroup as proposed." or "I vote against the newsgroup as proposed." Votes mailed to wrestle-yes or wrestle-no will be assumed to be completely unqualified votes for or against, no matter what the subject line or text is, as allowed by the guidelines. Finally, the rationale: Many different sports are discussed in rec.sport.misc. However, professional wrestling just doesn't fit in, because it is a sports exhibition, not a "pure" sport. During the call for discussion, I received mail from fans of other sports who are interested in sports in general, but who would like to see us out of misc. Because of the number of topics discussed, and the number of threads started, it is difficult to build a kill file, and what you do build runs roughly forever. Occasional attempts to actually discuss amateur wrestling in rec.sport.misc miss the intendended audience because the "real" sports fans all have every imaginable variation of wrestling in their kill files, and the pro-wrestling fans could care less. Thus, separating pro-wrestling from amateur wrestling is a good idea. Finally, in my opinion, the amount of wrestling traffic justifies a separate newsgroup. -- Nick Simicich --- uunet!bywater!scifi!njs --- njs@ibm.com (Internet)
