OK guys (and gals!) just to make sure everyone understands the necessity
for this newsgroup, aside from indulging our personal GOOD intentions
of advancing science and knowledge (MY perogative as a human being) but
for all those business people controlling lots 'o $$$$ out there, think
of the profits to be made! you can outshine Nintendo (tm, R, copyright, etc.)
with superior products!

Note: this has been a public service message to get business people on the
side of those rooting for *.virtual-worlds.

I have an idea. Why don't you hold an STV vote to determine the name? There
is a small amount of discussion remaining about the name...

Ballot:

Do you want a virtual reality group? Yes or no:

What name should it have: please list the names you like
	in order of preference:

		sci.virtual-worlds
		comp.virtual-worlds
		comp.interfaces
		comp.cyberspace
		misc.cyberspace
		etc...

Apology and/or Retraction: This article was not written in an attempt to
trivialize the seriousness of Virtual-Worlds technology. It is also not an
attempt to get businesspeople to consider this technology to be a short step
to a quick buck. It would help those hardworking people in the University of
Washington if SCI.Virtual-Worlds was established, as well as if the
businesspeople of the world would look towards a long-term goal that would
win much public support rather than the more common desire for short-term
gains. (please don't flame, in no way am I inferring or implying that ALL
business people care only about short-term gains.) Thank you for your time
and remember, a vote for SCI.Virtual-Worlds is a vote to advance the condition
of the human race, and our knowledge as well. Perhaps we will even think of
people before $$$$$$.

This is the one I want.

> comp.virtual-worlds
No. I want to discuss more than the computing aspects of virtual reality.
The technology of virtual reality is interdisciplinary.

> comp.interfaces
Hmm. Might be interesting, but obviously encompasses a lot more stuff
than virtual reality. Pull-down menus and obnoxiously small buttons that
are hard to push would also go in this newsgroup. Not for me.

> comp.cyberspace
Both William Gibson and the virtual reality people (I have been told)
are unhappy with the apparent mistaking of their creations for each other's.
Cyberspace is a place where high-tech low-lifes rip off data for the mob,
in Gibson's vision. Virtual reality is a way to expand the possible range
of one's experience. Undoubtedly, popular usage of this misnomer will
continue. I exhort the net.people to buck this trend by not choosing
this name.

> misc.cyberspace
This one strikes me wrong. It seems clear enough that the emerging
technology of virtual reality requires a great deal of application
of science. I might argue that tech.virtual-worlds is more appropriate,
but far be it from me to suggest another hierarchy...

P. S. I just started work at VPL Research. I don't speak for them.
This is the way *I* want it.
