I'd really like to see a news group devoted to the interests of scale modellers. I live in the "outback"of North Carolina - the nearest IPMS chapters are a 1+ hour drive away so its difficult to attend the meetings. A net forum would be great for "isolated" modellers like myself. Possible group activities would be: 1. Reviews of kits. When manufacturers start charging $60.00 on up for "hi-tech" kits I want to be sure I'm getting my money's worth. Sometimes the trade publications tend to be less than truthful in their reviews (Scale Modeller, Military Modeller), or, in order to save space the reviews are incomplete (Fine Scale Modeller). It would be helpful to discuss such kits with people who have built them. 2. Review of books periodicals, research materials, etc. The group could provide the same service as 1) but for hardcopy reference materials. 3. Clearinghouse of information. Suggestions on... . reputable mail-order hobby sources . modelling events . museums and other "real-thing" displays 4. Discussion of building and finishing techniques and tools. 5. Provide feedback to manufactures on what modellers like/dislike. 6. Encourage younger and beginner modellers. As for the name - rec.models.misc sounds about right. If the press ever found out how many tax dollars were wasted quibbling over news group names... Jesse Thorn thorn@godot.radonc.unc.edu 919-966-1101
