[news.groups] *% CALL FOR VOTES %* NEW GROUP - soc.culture.british

MATON%SASK.BITNET@EVANS.UCAR.EDU (12/19/89)

This is a formal call for votes on the formation of a new newsgroup
to be called soc.culture.british

The name was generally agreed upon during the discussion phase.

This group will be unmoderated.

Some of the primary uses of the group might include:

*Discussion of foods found in Britain

*Discussion of word uses in Britain

*Questions of things British that are strange or wierd
         to people from other cultures.

*All the normal things discussed, questioned etc. in the
         'soc.culture' groups

*British culture in general (what else?)

You may vote YES or NO by sending mail to maton@dvinci.usask.ca (UUCP)
or MATON@SASK (BITNET) or if all else fails try MATON@SASK.USask.ca
It is helpful, but not necessary if you specify your vote
in the subject line. POSTED VOTES DO NOT COUNT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES.
You may change your vote by clearly indicating both your new vote and
the fact that you are changing your vote in the subject line or the
body of the message.

It is preferable to simply put the line
'I vote YES to the formation of the newsgroup soc.culture.british'
or
'I vote NO to the formation of the newsgroup soc.culture.british'
as your message.

The voting will continue through January 20th, 1990. Any Votes RECEIVED after
this date will not be counted. I will post a mass acknowledgement of votes at
that time, along with the results. I will also post one or two additional
calls for votes before that time, in case anyone misses this one.

MATON%SASK.BITNET@EVANS.UCAR.EDU crossposts to ALL the above
groups, except for news.admin, which I added. This wanton
crossposting of talk.bizarre stupidity by talk.bizarre
stupids must cease; I at least am quite fed up with these
people and their inability to keep their trash in their own
group. We do not receive talk.bizarre here and we do not
want to and this continual crossposting of talk.bizarre
article to other groups is a subversion of a News
Administrator's control over his feed. I recommend that we
proceed at once with Gregory Paris' suggestion, which was to
refuse to propagate talk.bizarre from site to site; then
talk.bizarre would continue to exist, but much diminished; I
think it would eventually fade away.

Shouldn't unneighborly conduct on the net be discouraged?
Shouldn't this barrage of crossposting cease?
Shouldn't we stop propagating talk.bizarre?

This seems to be a bit of overkill don't you think? I mean this group
(s.c.celtic)is lucky to have a dozen articles a week, and it already (at least
in theory) deals with the Scottish and Welsh. Never in the past has the fact
that it is designed for Celtic subjects prevented various folks from posting
topics that were clearly English and I doubt that these topics would suddenly
become off limits.

I guess before I would vote yes I would like to see some sort of justification
for the group. Where is the demand? What about cross-posting problems (My guess
is that a posting that deals with say Scottish meat pies would belong in both
groups - why have two groups covering the same material??? why not have a
soc.culture.english instead?? Now that I would love to vote for......

	Yes.

>Shouldn't this barrage of crossposting cease?
Perhaps. I didn't see the original article but calls for
discussion of new news groups are often cross posted to many groups
under the impression that folks in those groups will be interested in
the new group. In this case the poster may have been under the
impression that talk.bizarre habitants were interested in British
culture.

No. If they are willing to annoy the net for a cheap thrill
they may go ape if their toy is taken away. One thing USENET is not
about is good manners. If the anarachy bothers you, you can pay good
money for a well managed and civilized venue.

As David's "coach", I suppose I should throw a suggestion here. Maybe
something along the lines of:

"Post more to t.b. Unwind your mind, and unrestrain yer brain."

Although, this *IS* a work place. So maybe:

"What the HELL are YOU doing in t.b? Not enough to DO?"

But then, under that one I SHOULDN'T be in t.b either. Oh the bitterness
of it all.

Sigh.

WoW! This hardly sounds like the Gary L Newell that flamed my butt
when I dared to make a posting to that group about England. I would
love to follow a group about the UK, as my mother is from Berkeley and
I try to at least keep some of that heritage, but that "warm"
reception and the seemingly never-ending articles about the IRA caused
me to unsubscribe after only about a month of reading soc.culture.celtic.

Granted, perhaps it was a bad month. I also don't remember too
clearly what it was that I posted, but only that a few kind souls lept
to my defense in reply to Gary. As I recall (this was, indeed, a
couple of years ago -- the climate may have changed markedly) the
basic tone of his article had been that English postings were
unwelcome. Maybe it's time I gave the group another go.

(This isn't a flame on Gary; I don't think I flamed him then either,
though I might have. It just brings back some memories which make his
article surprising to me.)
