[news.groups] FINAL CALL FOR VOTES: news.software.misc

jtc@van-bc.UUCP (J.T. Conklin) (01/11/90)

FINAL CALL FOR VOTES:	Unmoderated newsgroup news.software.misc

VOTING PERIOD:	December 20, 1989 to January 20, 1990.

SUMMARY OF DISCUSSION:

The proposal to create separate hierarchies for transports and readers
encountered considerable resistance. In general, it was felt that the
further classification didn't provide significant improvement over the
status quo.

My interim-proposal for a newsgroup for newsreaders did receive a lot
of support. Most people favoured "news.software.readers.misc"; but I
don't like the asymetry that would be present now that Kim Storm has
broadcast the call-for-votes for "news.software.nn".

The newsgroup "news.software.misc" is a compromise that satisfies my
original intent: centralize discussion about "orphan" news software.

Based on the reactions I have received, i conclude that:

	* There is enough support for an miscellaneous news software
	  news group.

	* A majority is in favour of the name news.software.misc.

CHARTER:

The unmoderated group will be used for discussion of news software
that does not have a package-specific newsgroup. This includes, but
is not limited to, questions, answers, ideas, hints, information from
various news-development groups, etc.

HOW TO VOTE:

Votes must be sent VIA E-MAIL to one of the following adresses:

	DNS:	jtc@wimsey.bc.ca
	UUCP:	..!uunet!van-bc!jtc

Clearly indicate whether the vote is for (YES) or against (NO) the
proposal, preferably by adding the vote to the subject line.

Voting relates to news.software.misc as propsed and nothing else; if
you disagree on the proposed name or charter, vote NO or abstain ---
conditional votes like "YES if ..." or "NO unless ..." will be
ignored.

The identity of the voters (E-mail & name) will be extracted from the
letters containing the votes by looking at:

	(1) the Reply-To: line if present, or
	(2) the From: line if it looks alright, or
	(3) the signature (although we hope to avoid this).
