[news.groups] CALL FOR VOTES: comp.text.tex

piet@cs.ruu.nl (Piet van Oostrum) (01/14/90)

[This contains a correction to the original proposal --moderator]

Hereby I propose the creation of a new newsgroup comp.text.tex.

The newsgroup will not be moderated.

The newsgroup is for TeX and LaTeX related postings. These are now mainly
found in comp.text, with some Postscript dvi-driver related postings in
comp.lang.postscript. About half (or a little bit more) of comp.text is
devoted to TeX and LaTeX, and a lot of TeXers rather would not be bothered
by nroff/troff or even WordPerfect. This motivates the place in the hierarchy.

The name consists of lowercase characters only, because of news software
constraints.

The creation of the newsgroup will also make it easier for the TeXhax
Digest told be bi-directionally gatewayed. It is now gatewayed *into*
comp.text, but for the benefit of those poor people without Usenet access,
the other way would also be preferable. Unfortunately, the call for
discussion sent to the TeXhax digest has never appeared there. Moreover,
the messages I sent to the moderators to ask their opinion have never been
replied (or at least I did not get a reply). So I don't know if they intend
to do a bidirectional gateway.

Votes should be *MAILED* to piet@cs.ruu.nl
(It is O.K to reply to this message and edit the subject to contain YES or NO).

We are connected to the internet [131.211.80.2]. If you have difficulties
try to reach me through a mailer that knows about MX records, e.g.
uunet.uu.net, or mcvax for bitnetters.

The message should state unambiguously whether the vote is YES or NO. The
preferred wording is: I vote YES to comp.text.tex, or alternatively: I vote
NO to comp.text.tex. A sentence like this in the subject line, or the body
of the message will simplify automatic tallying. Actually, a line with
"vote" and/or "comp.text.tex", and either "yes" or "no" in it, is o.k.
Case is not important.

Only private votes are valid.
Posted votes will not be accepted, even if you can't reach me by mail. If
you are in desperate need, you might post a message to me to try to contact
you, given enough information about your address.

I will try to acknowledge each vote separately, but as there are a lot of
brain-damaged mailers in the world, it is not guaranteed to work in all
cases. I will in any case make a mass acknowledgement (what a difficult
word :=).

The voting period will end on Sunday, Feb 11, 1990 on 00:00 (GMT). Votes
received after this time will not count. Be aware of the time differences
if you vote on Saturday, Feb 10.

TeXhax have lately been very busy, and the backlog was just too big for the
call for discussion to appear on TeXhax. One of the moderators replied that
he was not hostile to the idea, but that he just had no idea what the
implications for TeXhax would be.
