[news.groups] CALL FOR DISCUSSION to create SOC.CULTURE.VIETNAM

tan@Sun.COM (Tin Nguyen) (01/14/90)

This is a call for discussions to start a new newsgroup.

SUGGESTED NAME: soc.culture.vietnam

PURPOSE: To discuss subjects related specifically to Viet Nam.

The group is intended to be a medium for exchanging and discussing any
information relating to Vietnamese culture, news, politics, etc.

ESTIMATE OF USER INTERREST: 500+

There is currently a non-publicly organized Viet net through the mail alias
viet-net@cs.bu.edu. This Viet net has approximately 300 members.

TRAFFIC ESTIMATE: 30+ articles per week

Currently, there are about 5 entries on the Viet net each day. The traffic
should at least double once we have a public news group.

MODERATION: No.

COMMENTS:

There are some Viet netters who express interests in a public news group and
believe that USENET readers who do not know about Viet net or have access to
it would be very interest in a public newsgroup.

NOTE:

We have ~4 weeks to discuss about whether this newsgroup should be started,
and what its purposes/guidelines should be.

soc.culture.vietnamese would be a better name.

An interesting suggestion as to "vietnamese" instead of "vietnam", but
I don't quite understand the reasoning behind it. "vietnam" would keep the
naming convention of soc.culture."china, hongkong, ..."

I would like to see existence of soc.culture.vietnam group.
One question though: I am not very familiar with etiquette on USENET,
could someone please forward that to me if there's such thing?
I would want to hear more suggestions on purposes/guidelines as well.

And vietnamese would keep the naming convention of indian,korean,celtic...

Of the existing soc.culture groups, 10 refer to nationality ("vietnamese"),
and 7 refer to geographical area ("vietnam"). (I counted 'asean' as an area,
and ignored 'misc'.)

I think this is a great idea. Being isolated in the northern
states, I seldom have any news from VietNam.

Please put my vote "YES" for this newsgroup.
