  Call for votes:  Soc.History

this is a call for votes for the creation of the
unmoderated newsgroup, soc.history.  the voting

of this article in news.announce.newusers and the
other groups to which it is crossposted.

   -or-

..!uunet!crdgw1!lewis.crd.ge.com!welty

votes should be clear, concise, and unambiguous.
votes should be emailed; posted votes shall NOT
be counted. votes hinged on conditions shall not be
counted (but they will be reported on in the final
summary.)  votes should only be on the name soc.history;
votes mentioning another name shall not be counted, but
they will be reported on in the final summary. votes
will be acknowledged via email. emailed acknowledgements
which fail will be listed (address only, not the vote
itself) in subsequent postings during the voting period.

Notes:

the informal poll i ran on soc.history vs. misc.history
was inconclusive, depending on how i counted one somewhat
ambiguous vote which listed a number of names in order
of preference, rather than a single choice. in any case,
no clear direction was given by the overall results of
the poll.

interestingly enough, there was an odd dichotomy in the
reasons why some wanted misc.history instead of soc.history;
one prefered misc.* placement because he considers soc.*
to be a grouping of social clubs, and a history group to
be too serious for such a place. another considers soc.*
to be too serious a place for an unmoderated history group,
and prefers either talk.* or misc.*. one prefered misc.*
placement simply because his site doesn't get soc.* groups;
however, it is generally agreed that distribution is a bad
reason to select a name. it would seem that it will be
impossible to please everyone here, so i'm going with my
initial feelings and soc.history as the proposed name.

vote early, vote often!
