Regarding the creation of soc.culture.vietnamese: Among the dozen or so people who voiced their opinion, almost everyone prefers an unmoderated group. One major exception is Ran (randall@virginia.edu) who would vote NO to an unmoderated group. His concern is that the discussion may get too political, and not social or cultural. Upon evaluating his comments, I must disagree with his position. I would prefer unmoderated for the following reasons: a freer forum for discussion and no unduly hardship on the moderator(s). I believe in the integrity and self-restraint of the net users. Undoubtedly, there'll be sore messages that pop up now and then, but the it'll be drowned out by the majority. As to whether the net will get too political, it probably will at times. However, I see no indication from the people interested in the creation of the new group that it will be a political one. All types of discussions will have their highs and lows. For example, a while back soc.culture.hongkong was a highly political soc.politics.vietnamese-repatriation. But now that that wave is over, lots of different discussions on Hongkong culture and people surface. One can always scan the subject line of messages to select desired messages and ignore the rest. Should there be enough interest in highly political discussions over an extended period of time, a new group such as talk.politics.vietnam can be created to divert the traffic. For the time being, there is no indication that it is necessary. The netters who are interested in Vietnam, its people, and its culture (inside and outside of Vietnam) NEED a long awaited forum for voicing their opinions, concerns, observations... Won't you PLEASE Vote YES for SOC.CULTURE.VIETNAMESE! :-) - Tam -
