A discussion recently arose in comp.protocols.tcp-ip about its decreased technical content. I have some specific proposals to address this issue from the Usenet side. 1. Create a periodic posting to refresh/establish Usenet community memory that: - states the purpose of comp.protocols.tcp-ip. - states the fact that the newsgroup/mailing list gateway exists. - suggests topics relevant to comp.protocols.tcp-ip. - points to appropriate sources for information about SLIP, Novell, and other networking technologies. - states how to get the RFCs. - points to the status, conditions, and location of sources from Berkeley, Phil Karn, Clarkson, and so on. - briefly points to the Usenet guidelines for posting and newgroup creation. [Yes, I'll volunteer to create this posting; I'll need assistance in gathering some of the information. Email me directly.] 2. Create a Usenet-side newsgroup comp.protocols.slip. I intend to issue the call for discussion in news.groups/news.announce.newgroups this week. 3. Call for discussion on splitting out other topics that do not _specifically_ have to do with protocol implementation. Two come to mind: - network set-up, interconection, and administration (comp.admin.tcp-ip? comp.protocols.tcp-ip.admin?) - meta-issues about the Internet proper (comp.internet?) Summary: even though I am not a technical contributor to this list/group, I do find it educational, and would rather not see it continue to become less useable to the community of networking implementors. Note that followups are directed to the Usenet group news.groups. Interested Internet-side readers should email to me and I'll summarize. -- Mark Linimon / Lonesome Dove Computing Services / Southlake, Texas {mic, texbell}!nominil!linimon || "I said, welcome, linimon@nominil.lonestar.org || to the real world, kid"
